The curbside lanes on 8 Street SW come out permanently
The Beat
The cones went down along both curbs of 8 Street SW in August, between 4 Avenue and 12 Avenue. They are not temporary. The City's own word for the change is permanent, and the roadway behind the cones is being handed to walking, wheeling, planting and site furnishing for the rest of the street's life.
The lane removal runs from 4 to 12 Avenue
The Revitalize 8 Street SW project covers about 1.5 kilometres, from 2 Avenue SW at the north end to 17 Avenue SW at the south. Permanent curbside lane reductions arrive in the summer of 2026 on both sides of the street between 4 and 12 Avenue SW. The City's July 30 project update says Calgarians will begin to notice the closures in August.
Funding covers construction of the Downtown Segment only, meaning 2 to 10 Avenue SW, with interim safety improvements between 10 and 12 Avenue SW. The stretch from 10 Avenue south to 17 Avenue is not currently funded for construction. Anticipated completion of the funded segment is fall 2027, moved back from early 2027 after water utility work was added to the project in early 2026.
Thirty on-street stalls and twelve surface stalls come out
On-street parking is already not permitted along 8 Street SW between 6 Avenue and 12 Avenue SW, so the removals land north of there. Between 4 and 6 Avenue SW the City is taking out three loading zones and fifteen off-peak on-street stalls. Work near Lot 6, the City-owned surface lot north of 4 Avenue SW, and near the Bow River pathway removes another fifteen all-day on-street stalls along with twelve surface stalls. The City points drivers to the connecting avenues and the adjacent surface lots.
The underpass runs one direction until October
From mid July to early October the 8 Street SW roadway between 8 and 10 Avenue SW is closed to all southbound traffic while surface and water main work goes in at the 9 Avenue underpass. Northbound traffic is accommodated. Southbound drivers are detoured to 5 and 11 Street SW. Routes 2 and 6 are detoured with their stops unchanged, and the City notes travel time may increase.
The alleyway entrance on 8 Street SW between 8 and 9 Avenue is closed for the same period, with access kept through the 9 Street SW and 9 Avenue SW entrances. Sidewalks close in sections and pedestrian detours are signed, including for people with limited mobility. Access under the underpass itself is kept open, and businesses stay reachable throughout.

The 10 Avenue intersection is a September job
Construction at 8 Street and 10 Avenue SW began in early August with the southwest corner closed, and the work moves around the intersection from there. The City expects it finished by the end of September. Sidewalks are closed for the duration with pedestrian detours in place.
Left turns at 10 Avenue end in 2027
The finished design permanently reduces the roadway under the 9 Avenue bridge to a single lane in each direction. Once that lands in 2027, left turns at the 10 Avenue SW intersection are discontinued. Right turns stay for now, and the City says they may be discontinued later depending on traffic patterns. Anyone whose daily route uses that turn has about a year to find another one.
What the street is being rebuilt into
The design puts protected walking and wheeling paths on 8 Street and widens the pedestrian zone. It also prioritizes soil volume over tree count, so a smaller number of trees grows a larger canopy. Century Gardens, the 1975 Centennial park at 826 8 Avenue SW with the brutalist waterfalls, sits on the corridor and keeps its frontage.
The projected investment is $30 million, with $20.5 million from the Government of Canada through the Canada Community-Building Fund and the balance from City capital reserves. Eight of the city's twenty-one approved office-to-residential conversions are happening along or near 8 Street, and the University of Calgary's downtown campus for the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape is on it as well.
Who this lands on before 2027
Anyone living or working between 4 and 8 Avenue SW may see short, localized water shut-offs while the tie-ins go in, communicated at least a week ahead where possible. The water system improvements run between 4 and 6 Avenue SW this year and 6 to 8 Avenue SW in 2027. At the 8 Street CTrain station, concrete replacement in front of the west ramp sends riders around to the east ramp, and the northbound and southbound bus stops at 7 Avenue are temporarily relocated.
South of the tracks the corridor runs into the Beltline, which is where the interim safety improvements between 10 and 12 Avenue SW tie into the existing 12 Avenue SW cycle track. The other downtown capital file on the fall calendar is the Green Line's downtown route.
If you are weighing an address on this side of downtown, the construction calendar is a two-year fact. Our full neighbourhoods index carries the Beltline and the rest of the city. Start the conversation when you want to know how a rebuild like this reads on one specific block.
The lanes came out in August 2026. The sidewalk that replaces them arrives in 2027.
