R-G and R-Gm lots and homes in Calgary
R-G and R-Gm are Calgary’s low density mixed housing districts. The City calls them zones that “allow for a variety of housing forms including single-detached, semi-detached, and rowhouses”, where “Homes may include a secondary suite or backyard suite.”
What separates them from R-CG
R-CG is the contextual district, written for redevelopment inside established streets. R-G and R-Gm carry a similar range of forms without that contextual framing, and the two are named as one entry in the bylaw.
The backyard suite
One July 2026 motion treats R-G differently from every other low-density district. The City’s wording · “Secondary suites as a permitted use in all low-density districts. Backyard suites will remain permitted in R-G and discretionary in all other zones, with no additional rule changes.” Permitted and discretionary are different conversations with the Development Authority, and on a program running several parcels the difference compounds.
What the repeal left behind
The repeal of blanket rezoning took effect on August 4 2026, and by the City’s own figure 99 per cent of properties returned to the zoning that applied before it. R-G was one of the three districts the exemption criteria name, beside R-CG and H-GO, so a parcel holding it today either held it before 2024 or came through an exemption. Which of the two it is decides its durability.
What this search shows
Every Calgary listing the feed records on an R-G or R-Gm parcel. Houses and vacant lots arrive in one set. The district reaches the feed as text a listing brokerage types, so this search runs on every spelling in use rather than on one code.
Where the district gets confirmed
A listing’s district is what the seller’s brokerage entered. The City’s land use map is the record. We read one against the other before a parcel goes into a conversation, because the two disagree often enough that the check is cheaper than the correction.
The wording above is the City of Calgary’s, read on September 17 2026 at calgary.ca and the City’s page on the repeal. The bylaw moves, so the date rides with the words.
