6th and Tenth

6th and Tenth stands at 1010 6 Street SW, on the corner its name announces, in the northern half of the Beltline where the residential towers press up against the downtown office grid. It is a point tower, meaning a slim floor plate carried straight up rather than a podium with a slab on top, and that shape is why apartments on every side of it get a view.

The building

The tower runs 31 storeys and was finished in 2017. Lamb Development Corp built it, a Toronto developer with a short list of Calgary projects. The exterior is black brick with balconies and windows set at deliberately irregular sizes, so the elevation does not resolve into the even grid a tower of this height usually carries. A restaurant occupies the base.

A fitness centre sits on the second floor and opens onto a patio carrying a hot tub. The outdoor pool is heated, and a rooftop deck runs at the top.

A room the building calls the Sky Lounge holds a kitchen with space to entertain. A concierge works around the clock, and security runs on the same schedule. Parking is titled and heated underground, with visitor stalls below and bicycle storage beside them. Homes take titled storage lockers, and the building carries a clubhouse.

What is around it

The block carries a small water park with green space, water features, stone blocks, and a sculpture garden set among them. From the front door, 10 Avenue SW runs east into the Beltline's restaurant blocks and west toward the West End. Two blocks north, the 7 Avenue transit corridor carries both CTrain lines at street level, with platforms at 6 Street SW and 7 Street SW. The 17 Avenue SW retail strip is seven blocks south, which is a walk rather than a stroll but a straight one. Go the other way and the Bow River pathway is past the office blocks, with the Peace Bridge crossing from it into Sunnyside and the Kensington shops beyond.

The tower explains itself in about a minute and the district takes longer, which is why we wrote Living in Beltline alongside it.
