Avli on Atlantic
Avli on Atlantic stands at 1020 9 Avenue SE, on the street the building is named for. Atlantic Avenue was 9 Avenue's name from the 1880s, when the town that grew up east of the Elbow River made this its main street, and Inglewood is the oldest neighbourhood in Calgary, established in 1875 after Fort Calgary was built.
The building
Seven storeys, 65 homes above ground-floor retail, finished in 2019. Greenview Developments built it and Sturgess Architecture drew it. Seven storeys is a deliberate figure on this street. The historic frontage along 9 Avenue runs two and three storeys, so the building steps its mass back from the sidewalk rather than presenting the full height at the property line.
The third floor carries a landscaped rooftop garden terrace. The second floor holds a library and meeting space, and a book exchange runs in it. A guest suite is available for owners to rent, and there is a fitness room on site. Parking below grade is heated and secure, with visitor spaces alongside the resident stalls, and the parkade carries a dog and bike wash station. Storage lockers and bike lockers are secured separately.
What is around it
The 9 Avenue commercial strip runs east and west from the door, carrying record shops, restaurants, and the heritage storefronts that got the district its designation. The Bow River pathway is two blocks north across the rail line, and Pearce Estate Park and the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary sit further east along the water. The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland, which was Fort Calgary until 2024, is at the west end of the avenue where it crosses the Elbow. There is no CTrain station in Inglewood, and the walk into downtown along 9 Avenue takes you past the Simmons Building and into East Village. The Government of Alberta publishes a historical walking tour of Atlantic Avenue, which is the shortest route into the district's history and takes about an afternoon.
