Montana
The Montana stands at 817 15 Avenue SW, a block north of 17 Avenue in the Beltline. It reaches 100.5 metres and finished in 2009. Sources read it at either 27 or 28 storeys, so we have given the height rather than pick between them.
The lobby carries a concierge desk. Residents share an exercise room and a conference room, and three high-speed elevators serve the tower. The parkade is underground and heated, with a block of stalls set aside for visitors.
The building
The tower tapers as it rises and finishes in a peaked roof, which is unusual on a Calgary residential building of its era and makes it easy to pick out of the skyline from the south. The glazing is blue tinted. Descriptions of the construction name thick concrete floor slabs and eight-inch party walls between homes, and the suites are air conditioned.
What sits around it
Fifteenth Avenue sits in the Connaught side of the Beltline, the older of the two communities folded into the district in 2003. Seventeenth Avenue SW runs one block south, 12.5 kilometres of arterial road that carries a dense concentration of bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and shops through this stretch, and that picked up the Red Mile name during the 2004 Flames playoff run.
Central Memorial Park is four blocks northeast, 4.68 acres laid out in 1889 and landscaped in Victorian style, with the Memorial Park Library at its east end. That library opened on January 2 1912 to a design by the Boston firm McLean and Wright, the first purpose-built public library in Alberta, and the park and library together were named a National Historic Site of Canada in January 2018. The 7 Avenue transit corridor is a walk north, where 7 Street SW and 8 Street SW stations carry both CTrain lines.
