Nova
Nova stands at 1118 12 Avenue, in the Connaught side of the Beltline. It completed in 2008 for Qualex-Landmark. Rafii Architects was design architect, working with the local practice BKDI Architects.
The fitness centre carries a steam room. Residents share an owners’ lounge, and two guest suites are held for visitors. Each home carries an assigned storage locker. Parking is titled and underground, and a concierge works the lobby.
One of three
Nova is the middle building of a trio. Stella came first in 2006, Nova followed in 2008, and Luna closed the set in 2012, and the three sit side by side along 12 Avenue connected by a podium of townhomes and commercial space. Across the three towers Qualex-Landmark publishes 567 homes and more than 1,021 parking stalls. Reading them as one project rather than three separate addresses is the useful thing to know about this block, because the podium is continuous and the towers were drawn together.
Storey counts for the individual towers do not settle. The architects give the trio as 22, 29, and 32 storeys without saying which is which, and the trade press gives Nova as 27. We have left the figure out rather than guess.
What sits around it
Twelfth Avenue runs east and west through the middle of the Beltline, one of the densest communities in Calgary, formed in 2003 from Connaught and Victoria Park. The name of the district comes from an early twentieth-century streetcar route.
Central Memorial Park sits a few blocks east along the same avenue, two hectares and complete by 1912, carrying the Memorial Park Library of that same year at its east end and named a National Historic Site of Canada in January 2018. Seventeenth Avenue SW is five blocks south. The 7 Avenue corridor is north, where 8 Street SW station serves both CTrain lines.
