Park Point

Park Point stands on 12 Avenue SW at 2 Street, in the Beltline. It runs 34 storeys and 289 homes and it finished in 2018. Qualex-Landmark developed it, IBI Group was architect, Trepp Design did the interiors, and Durante Kreuk drew the landscape.

The building carries a gym and a yoga and pilates studio facing the park. A steam room and a sauna sit beside them with change rooms. A private owners’ lounge holds its own kitchen. The outdoor terrace has a fire pit and a barbecue area, and a concierge works the desk around the clock.

Parking is titled and underground, and bike storage runs with a maintenance area. Qualex-Landmark puts the landscaped garden at 9,000 square feet, carrying 2,302 plants and 48 trees.

The address is the argument

The tower faces Central Memorial Park across the street. That park was laid out in 1889 on 4.68 acres, landscaped in Victorian style, and it holds a cenotaph and an equestrian statue of Russell Lambert Boyle, along with a First World War soldier raised by the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire. The Memorial Park Library sits at its east end, opened on January 2 1912 to a design by the Boston firm McLean and Wright in Edwardian Classical style, and it was the first purpose-built public library in Alberta. In January 2018, the same year the tower topped out, the park and library together were designated the Central Memorial Park and Library National Historic Site of Canada.

The park went through a full revitalisation between 2008 and 2009 and reopened in May 2010, which is why it reads as maintained rather than as a survival.

What sits around it

The Beltline is Calgary's densest community, assembled in 2003 out of Connaught and Victoria Park and named for an early streetcar route. Council approved its redevelopment plan in May 2006 with the intention of housing up to 40,000 residents by 2035. Seventeenth Avenue SW is five blocks south. The 7 Avenue transit corridor is four blocks north, with 1 Street SW and Centre Street stations serving both CTrain lines.

We wrote about the community around it. Living in Beltline.
