Crescent Heights
On the escarpment above the Bow, with a 167-step staircase down to the river.
A. J. McArthur subdivided the land in 1906 and began selling lots. The Village of Crescent Heights followed on 1 May 1908, was annexed by Calgary in 1911 and established as a neighbourhood in 1914. Calgary’s first branch library opened here in 1913 in the Hicks Block, which is still standing. The community sits above the north escarpment of the Bow valley and is bisected by Centre Street, with the shops running along Centre and Edmonton Trail, and McHugh Bluff dropping to the river on the south edge.
