East Village

The oldest ground in the city and the newest housing stock downtown.

Calgary began at this end of downtown, where the North-West Mounted Police built the post in 1875 that became Fort Calgary. The district declined through the twentieth century as the centre shifted west, and in 2007 the City created the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation to rebuild it under a master plan adopted in 2009. What stands now is largely new. RiverWalk along the Bow, the restored thirty-one acres of St. Patrick’s Island, the George C. King Bridge, the Central Library and Studio Bell. Housing here is condo and apartment rather than detached.
