Hounsfield Heights and Briar Hill

An escarpment address, with downtown to the south and the Rockies to the west.

The land was part of the Riley homestead, where Thomas Riley and Georgina Hounsfield Riley settled in 1888. Their house, Hounsfield Lodge, stood where the Bethany Care Centre is now, and her name is the one that ended up on the map. Subdivided and annexed in 1906, the area got only eleven houses before the First World War and sat largely empty until after the Second. Briar Hill filled in through the early 1950s, and North Hill Centre, the city’s first purpose-built indoor mall, opened on 16th Avenue in 1958. Lions Park station sits inside the community.
