Workers’ houses on the ridge above the Stampede grounds, still being rebuilt.

Spiller Road, which splits the community, follows a stretch of the Old North Trail that ran to Montana long before the fort. Calgary’s early industry gathered around here. The CPR railyards, the stockyards, the Calgary Herald, the brewery, and a sandstone quarry at Scotsman’s Hill that supplied the stone for the sandstone buildings downtown. The first houses went up beside those businesses to hold their workers, and the Edwardian and Queen Anne Revival ones are still standing. The name arrived in 1956, when Burnsland, Brewery Flats, Grandview and Mills Estate consolidated as a single community.
