Rideau Park

A shelf inside a bend of the Elbow, with 1955 towers along the edge of it.

The Elbow River wraps this community on the north and west and the escarpment drops away east, which leaves a shelf of ground that holds two neighbourhoods at once. Rideau Park was established in 1911 and designated a community of the city in 1967. In 1954 an investor syndicate bought 6.31 hectares on the crest and had Peter Caspari draw six International-style towers; four went up on Rideau Place in 1955 and they still carry 271 of the community's 463 assessed parcels. Behind them, 48 parcels survive from the 1910s and 1920s. Lindsay's Folly of 1913 and the 1955 Southern Alberta Pioneers' Memorial Building share the crest at 3625 4th Street SW.
