Sunalta

A CPR subdivision west of downtown, named for sunny Alberta.

The land was Canadian Pacific Railway ground, annexed in 1907 and laid out in two passes, 1909 and 1911, with the community established in 1912. The name is read as a contraction of Sunny Alberta. Sunalta School went up in 1912 in sandstone cut from a quarry in the ravine immediately west of it, and around 1964 that ravine was filled in and became part of Crowchild Trail, so the stone and the road occupy the same ground. Rezoning in the 1950s brought in the apartment walk-ups that still sit among the older houses. Sunalta station opened in 2012 as the first elevated stop on the CTrain system.
