Tuxedo Park

A streetcar subdivision on Centre Street, built for people who worked downtown.

This was one of the subdivisions thrown up during the boom before the First World War, annexed in 1910 and established as a community in 1929. The developers traded concessions to the City in exchange for streetcar lines, and service began in September 1911, which is what made an outlying subdivision liveable for working families in the first place. The Tuxedo streetcar ran up Centre Street North from 1909 until 1947, linking the terminus at 32 Avenue to downtown. The Balmoral Workers Cottages, built in 1912 and 1913 by speculators to house that first wave, still stand, as does the earliest house in the area, a three-storey farmhouse now designated as historic. The 1906 Balmoral subdivision sits inside the present boundaries.
