Winston Heights and Mountview

Two communities on the Nose Creek escarpment, joined in the sixties.

Mountview came first, thinly settled from the early 1900s until the Calgary Municipal Railway pushed a streetcar line up what is now Edmonton Trail in 1911 and made the walk to work realistic for tradespeople employed in the southeast. Some of the Craftsman bungalows from that decade are still here, known locally as builders cottages. In 1945 the City set aside land north of 24 Avenue NE and east of Edmonton Trail under the Veterans' Land Act, one acre to a parcel. The lots were later halved, which produced 115 houses by 1952 and left the generous frontages the area is known for. In 1947 the veterans asked City Council to name their part Winston Heights after Churchill. The two communities merged in 1962. The Winston Golf Club and Fox Hollow run along the eastern edge above Nose Creek.
