The school year and the transit year both start August 31

The Beat

One Monday, two systems

The last boxes come off the truck on a weekend near the end of August. Two mornings later a lunch bag sits on the counter, and somebody in the house has to know which corner the bus stops at. Monday, August 31 was the first day of school for Calgary Board of Education students, and the day Calgary Transit's fall service changes took effect.

Calgary Catholic starts the same morning. Its calendar marks August 31 and September 1 as staggered entry days, which means one school can open to different students on different mornings, and the school office is where that answer lives. Labour Day falls on September 7 this year, which is why the bell rings before the long weekend rather than after it.

What the transit changes are

Many of the fall changes are schedule adjustments. A few of them move a specific corner. In Crestmont, Route 108 extends from Cresthaven Rise SW out to Crestbrook Drive SW. The stop on Cresthaven Rise is removed, and four new stops open along the expanded loop. Service also runs more often at peak times.

On Route 4, the stop inside the bus loop at 78 Avenue Terminal moves out of the loop and over to Centre Street N, just south of 78 Avenue NE. On Route 145, a stop on northbound Redstone Grove NE is removed, and nearby stops keep running. Both of those changes are small on a map. Both of them change which corner someone stands on in the dark in November.

North central riders have more to check

The North Central and Saddletowne service reviews take effect the same Monday, and the express network is partway through a transition. Calgary Transit describes the north central work as aligning the network more closely with major amenities, high schools among them. Route 116 Coventry Hills Express and Route 142 Panorama Express each drop to one trip per day in each direction. Route 118 Hidden Valley and Route 421 Panatella come off the map. A new Route 503 Symons Valley Express runs between downtown and Sage Hill, and Route 300 becomes Route 500, the Airport Express.

School service and the trip planner

School service routes start again for the new year, and the school expresses numbered 696 through 899 have all their trips reinstated. Calgary Transit says school trip planning should be available after August 21 for a departure date of August 31 or later. Put the real address into the planner, pick the real Monday, name the school as the destination, and read the walk at both ends of the ride.

When possession lands in the last week of August

Possession lands on the 21st, a Friday. The first bell rings ten days later. In between there is a weekend of boxes and a Sunday night when nobody has walked to the stop yet.

The walk is the part a map does not tell you. A stop three blocks away on a map is a different thing in a housecoat at 8:05 with a kid who cannot find a shoe. Walk it once on a weekday, at the hour it will actually happen, before the first morning that counts.

If you are still choosing the address, we put the walk to the stop on the same list as the kitchen and the furnace. That kind of ground detail sits on our full neighbourhoods index.

The bell rings at the same time whether or not the kettle has been found.
