What East Village gains from five new buildings

The Beat

Two construction sites are open in East Village this summer. One sits immediately east of the Central Library, where Bankside Properties started work in February. The other is on the Q Block beside the finished Verve building, where Slokker Homes broke ground on Vibe on April 13. Calgary Municipal Land Corporation counts five developments beginning construction in the neighbourhood during 2026, and by CMLC's tally they add more than 700 rental and condo homes along with 132 hotel rooms.

The two already underway

Library Square is 162 purpose-built rental homes in two six-storey buildings, according to CMLC, which describes brick detailing on the exterior and amenities in a courtyard and on the roof. CMLC expects tenants in 2027. The site sits immediately east of the Central Library and within reach of the City Hall LRT platform, which is the kind of detail that decides where somebody reads on a Sunday in February and how they get to work on the Monday.

Vibe broke ground on April 13. Slokker Homes is building 218 rental homes over six commercial units, and CMLC put the building at 14 storeys at the groundbreaking, up from the 13 storeys named in its January outlook. The main floor carries a dog wash and a bike wash, per CMLC, which tells you who the building expects to house. Slokker is using a prefabricated lightweight steel system, which the developer says shortens construction and reduces the time the surrounding streets spend beside a site. Occupancy is targeted for early 2028.

Lyric adds 208 units on Lot G

Ayrshire Group's Lyric is 208 units in a six-storey building on Lot G, and CMLC anticipates construction starting this year. Alberta's major projects registry still carries it as proposed. Of the five, it is the second at six storeys, which puts two of this year's buildings at a height a person can take in from the sidewalk without tipping their head back.

A childcare address at street level

Trico Communities' Edgewater is roughly 170 residential units across nine storeys on Lot 41, and CMLC lists commercial space and on-site childcare in the building. That last item changes a morning. A parent living upstairs walks a child to a door downstairs, then keeps walking to work. Every other family in East Village gains a childcare address they can reach without a car.

The hotel on Lot N

The fifth is a five-storey hotel with 132 rooms, Truman's project on Lot N, according to CMLC. Hotel guests keep different hours from office workers. A lobby stays lit at eleven at night, and the stretch of sidewalk between a hotel door and the RiverWalk carries people at hours when a block of offices has emptied out.

Where this leaves the RiverWalk

CMLC says East Village has added more than 1,700 homes since 2009, and the master plan carries the neighbourhood to 11,500 residents alongside 300,000 square feet of commercial space. The five buildings starting this year move that count by more than 700 homes. They do not open together. Library Square lets tenants in during 2027 and Vibe targets early 2028, so the change arrives across about two years.

Put those homes on the ground and a Tuesday in the neighbourhood changes shape. The RiverWalk carries more people at six. St. Patrick's Island, which CMLC calls East Village's 31-acre backyard, holds more dogs on a Saturday. Somebody is carrying groceries home on foot. Somebody else is walking a stroller toward the childcare door in the Edgewater.

Our East Village guide covers what is already standing. The first of the five opens in 2027.
