Pixel
Pixel sits at 235 9A Street NW, one street off the 10 Street run through Kensington. Battistella Developments built it. The City cleared the site under a demolition permit in September 2011 and issued the building permit in April 2012, and Battistella finished it in 2014 at eight storeys and 98 homes. Three levels of parking run underneath. The facade is a grid of yellow cubes, which is more visual appetite than a building of this size usually shows in Calgary.
The roof carries a communal garden and patio with a gas fireplace, looking south over the river at downtown. Bicycle storage is indoors. Parking and storage lockers are both titled, underneath. The balconies carry gas and electrical outlets. Security runs around the clock, with carbon-dioxide detectors through the parkade.
Sunnyside on the map, Kensington on the street
The address is in Sunnyside on the City's own record and in Kensington by every other reckoning, which is the usual confusion on this side of the river. Sunnyside runs from Centre Street west to 10 Street NW, with McHugh Bluff above and the Bow River below. Hillhurst carries on west from 10 Street to 18 Street. Kensington is the business revitalisation zone laid across both, and the two communities share one association.
What is around it
Sunnyside station opened on the Red Line in 1987 and is a short walk east. The Bow River pathway runs along the south edge of the community. Riley Park, nine hectares off the homestead the Riley family took up in 1888 and left to the city in 1909, is northwest. Downtown is one bridge away, and the Peace Bridge lands on this bank, Santiago Calatrava's helical steel tube open since March 2012.
