Evanston

The Atlas

Your Saturday starts at 115 Evanston Drive NW, across from Shoppers, where the community association's park keeps a firepit you can book and a community garden run by volunteers. To the south-west, a City district park of about 22 hectares follows West Nose Creek, the small stream the plan says flows north to south along its floodplain.

Grounds

Evanston covers about 4.9 square kilometres of the city's north-west, with 144 Avenue NW on its north and 14 Street NW on its east, and Stoney Trail NW and Symons Valley Road NW close the south. The land came into the city with Symons Valley on July 1 1989, annexed from the Municipal District of Rocky View, and the City adopted the Symons Valley Community Plan on April 2 2001. The plan says the valley takes its name from W. E. Simons, the area's first postmaster, whose home served as the local post office from 1907, and that the spelling Symons probably began as an error on the post office sign.

The plan found the land in farms, mainly grazing and cultivation in quarter sections or larger, much of it already bought by development companies and leased back for farming. It describes West Nose Creek as a small stream flowing north to south along a floodplain 250 to 500 metres wide, with an escarpment of about 40 metres on the valley's eastern side, and native grassland surviving along the creek, blue grama among it. We walk the pathways above the reserve before we write about a street beside them, since the Federation of Calgary Communities describes the pathway system overlooking protected environmental reserve.

Homes

The plan set a minimum density of 17.3 units per gross developable hectare and pictured neighbourhoods with semi-detached dwellings, townhouses and apartments beside single-detached homes. The City's 2026 assessment roll dates about two thirds of today's residential parcels to the 2010s, with the first from 2000, and the 2021 census counted 18,710 people in the community's private households, in the City's community profile. Three apartment buildings of four storeys or more at Evanston Ridge, 905 Evanston Drive NW, took their City licences in 2023.

Qualico Communities lists Evanston among its past Calgary communities, and the Federation of Calgary Communities dates the community's establishment to around 2002 or 2003. We read the building year on the roll before anything else for an Evanston listing, since the roll's years run from 2000 into the 2020s.

Everyday

The Evanston-Creekside Community Association, incorporated in 2007, keeps no hall and holds its events at Evanston Park, 115 Evanston Drive NW, where it also keeps a seasonal ice rink. City pathway segments across the community carry the Greenway flag, part of the Rotary/Mattamy Greenway that Parks Foundation Calgary says encircles the city on 145 kilometres of connected pathways. The City runs an off-leash area at 12708 Evanspark Boulevard NW, open since December 1 2018.

Our Lady of Grace School, a Calgary Catholic School District elementary and junior high at 736 Evanston Drive NW, opened in September 2016 and is named for the Virgin Mary. St. Josephine Bakhita School, the District's elementary at 3 Evansglen Close NW, took its name from the trustees on February 10 2021, and it honours Saint Josephine Bakhita, born in 1868 in Olgossa, Darfur. Kenneth D. Taylor School, a Calgary Board of Education elementary at 30 Evanscove Circle NW, is named for Canada's ambassador to Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis, who was born and raised in Calgary and, with his wife, shielded six American diplomats. Evanston Heights, the Board's new middle school at 221 Evanston Drive NW for grades 4 to 8, opened with the 2026–2027 school year. Designations change year to year, so confirm current catchments with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. Route 124 carries the community's name, and route 115 runs along Symons Valley Parkway.

Edges

144 Avenue NW runs the north, with Ambleridge across its western stretch and Moraine across its eastern one, and 14 Street NW closes the east, with Carrington across. Stoney Trail NW runs the south-east, with Panorama Hills across its north-eastern stretch and Hidden Valley across its south-western one, and Symons Valley Road NW runs the south-west, with Kincora across. On the west the line runs east of West Nose Creek, with the creek and Sage Hill across it, and a stretch of Symons Valley Parkway, Sage Hill across, joins it to Symons Valley Road. The wider map sits on the full neighbourhoods index.
