Taradale

The Atlas

Your evening loop starts on Taracove Estate Drive, where a City park of about seven hectares wraps the larger of the two water bodies the City's water map calls Taradale Lake. The second sits in a park along Taradale Drive and 80 Avenue. MAX Orange stops inside the line, at Martindale Boulevard Station.

Grounds

Taradale covers about 2.8 square kilometres of the city's northeast, between 80 Avenue NE on the north and 64 Avenue NE on the south, with Falconridge Boulevard NE and a stretch of Saddletowne Circle NE on the west and Homestead across its east line. The City's Saddle Ridge Area Structure Plan, adopted on June 19 1984, covers it. The plan records the sections it covers as annexed to the City in 1961, and the Federation of Calgary Communities records Taradale as annexed in 1961 and first developed in 1984, when its development area ran to about 32 hectares, in the plan's figure.

The plan's history runs back to a 1976 design brief that held the land north of 64 Avenue as urban reserve because of sour gas and servicing constraints, and to an amendment City Council approved in 1977 that opened the first Taradale lands for development. The Federation describes the ground as essentially flat, with a gradual slope from the northeast to the southwest, and the plan records the area's ponds and shrub cover as habitat for hawks and waterfowl before building began. We start with the 1984 plan in Taradale, since it records why the first lands opened when they did.

Homes

The 1984 plan expected Taradale's first phases to be mainly single-family detached homes at up to 8.5 units per acre, and it told the later residential areas to follow the subdivision pattern set in Martindale and Taradale. The Federation calls the predominant form low density residential. The City's 2026 assessment roll dates about three in four of today's residential parcels to the 2000s, with the first from 1983 and a few hundred more from each of the other decades on the roll.

The 2021 census counted 17,630 people in the community's private households, in the City's community profile. We read a Taradale listing against the plan's subdivision pattern, because the street a house sits on tells the reader which phase of the plan built it.

Everyday

The City's water map names two water bodies Taradale Lake, and each sits inside a City community park. The larger, about four hectares of water, fills a park of about seven hectares on Taracove Estate Drive and Taravista Drive NE, and the smaller sits in a park of about six hectares along Taradale Drive, the Taralake streets and 80 Avenue NE. Manmeet Singh Bhullar Park, a City regional park of about four hectares on the City's row, was completed in 2018. Parks Foundation Calgary records that after his death in 2015, his family built it with the Calgary Foundation and the Parks Foundation, close to where he lived, to a design by Ground3 Landscape Architects.

Ted Harrison School, a Calgary Board of Education elementary and junior high, sits at 215 Taravista Way NE, and Taradale School, the Board's elementary, at 170 Taravista Drive NE. Our Lady of Fatima, a Calgary Catholic School District elementary, is at 6320 Taralea Park NE. Designations change year to year, so confirm current catchments with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. MAX Orange, the line that connects the Brentwood and Saddletowne CTrain stations, stops inside the community, and route 61 carries its name. The Calgary Co-op at 6520 Falconridge Boulevard NE is a gas station and car wash.

Edges

80 Avenue NE closes the north, with Saddle Ridge across it. On the west, Saddletowne Circle NE faces Saddle Ridge at the north end and Falconridge Boulevard NE faces Martindale, where the City's licence file places the Genesis Centre at 7555 Falconridge Boulevard NE. Calgary Public Library opened the Saddletowne Library inside it on January 3 2012, the day after the library's hundredth anniversary. 64 Avenue NE runs the south, with Falconridge across its western stretch and Coral Springs across its eastern one, and the east line, which follows no street, faces Homestead.
