Sage Hill
The Atlas
Your Saturday starts at the library on Sage Hill Passage, open from ten until five, and ends on a walking path in the Sage Hill Natural Area on the community's east side, where West Nose Creek runs. In between, dinner comes down to dosa on Sage Hill Plaza or kabobs on Sage Valley Common.
Grounds
Sage Hill covers about 3.7 square kilometres in the city's northwest, bounded by Shaganappi Trail on the west, Symons Valley Parkway on the south, 144 Avenue NW on the north and, on the east, a line just past West Nose Creek. The City's annexation layer puts the community on land annexed in 1989, under Board Order 19137. The community association traces the first half of the name to the common sage plant that once filled the green spaces of the farm fields, and the second to the rolling hills that ran from Symons Valley to 144th Street, and it dates the change from farming and ranching land to suburban Sage Hill to 2008.
The City's inventory of historic resources records a sandstone ranch house at 13616 30 Street NW, which it dates to 1898. It was built for the rancher James Christie, who died in August 1894 while the house was still under construction, and the Beaton family held the house and the ranch from about 1903 until 1968. Before the United Farmers of Alberta had a hall, the Nose Creek Old Timers' Club held its dances at the Beaton house. The inventory describes a classic ranch site in a valley beside a creek, and its record, last updated in 2015, describes a private house, so it is a piece of history and never a stop. We read a suburb's ranch before its roads, since the ranch picked the ground first.
Homes
The Federation of Calgary Communities describes the homes as detached single-family houses mixed with townhouses and condominiums, and the association's membership covers four areas, Sage Hill, Symons Gate, Sage Meadows and Sage Crest. Genesis Land Development presents Sage Meadows as its own community and sells condominiums and townhomes in Sage Hill Crest. The City's 2026 assessment roll dates almost all of the residential parcels to the 2010s and the 2020s, with a small share from the late 2000s. The Province lists a six-storey building of about 88 homes under construction in the community, on a City building permit issued in May 2024.
A 2017 amendment to the Symons Valley Community Plan covered about 38 hectares on the west side, bounded by Shaganappi Trail and a deep coulee, and it set a mix of homes and commercial space around a primary transit network. The City's own Symons Valley Centre site will carry new multi-family homes beside its library. We read a new community's plan amendments alongside its show homes.

Everyday
Sage Hill Library, a Calgary Public Library branch, opened at 19 Sage Hill Passage NW on June 16 2017 as a starter location of 1,700 square feet. The City is building its replacement on the seven-acre Symons Valley Centre site at 251 Sage Hill Boulevard NW, across Sage Hill Gate from the Walmart Supercentre, and its January 2026 update has the library on track to open in mid-2028. A Calgary Transit terminal is planned for the same site beyond 2030. The association names the commercial districts as Sage Hill Plaza, Sage Hill Crossing and Sage Hill Quarter, and the City's licences there include a T&T Supermarket and a Calgary Co-op food store beside a run of independent kitchens.
The Sage Hill Natural Area, a City district park, sits on the east side, and the Federation's description of the community names the nature preserve and its walking paths. No school operates inside Sage Hill today. Sage Hill Elementary School, a Calgary Board of Education school planned at 235 Sage Valley Drive NW, was approved for design on March 14 2025 and for construction on July 9 2026, and the Board is targeting completion in 2029 to 2030. The Province also lists a new junior high school in Sage Hill at the design stage. Designations change year to year, so confirm current catchments with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District.
Edges
Shaganappi Trail runs the west side, with Nolan Hill across it, and Symons Valley Parkway closes the south, with Kincora and Evanston across. 144 Avenue NW runs the north, with Glacier Ridge across about three quarters of its length, then Symons Valley Ranch and Ambleridge. On the east the line runs just past West Nose Creek, so the creek stays inside Sage Hill, and the Federation of Calgary Communities carries it to the top of the ridge, with Evanston on the far side. The wider map sits on the full neighbourhoods index.
