Living at Vogue, Downtown West End, Calgary

The Atlas

Twenty-five single-family houses are left in this whole community. That is the number that explains the Downtown West End faster than any description of it, because the district went vertical early and kept going, and a tower here has towers for neighbours rather than back lanes. The Bow is six blocks north with a pathway on it. The office core starts at the end of the block, and in January you can reach a good deal of it without a coat.

Grounds

Vogue stands at 930 6 Avenue SW, toward the western edge of downtown Calgary. The Downtown West End runs from the Bow River south to the CP tracks and from 9 Street W west to 14 Street W, which makes this building one street inside the eastern boundary.

The community dates to 1884, the year after the railway arrived, and almost nothing residential from that period survives. What is here instead is a high-density pocket where the pattern is set by towers, and the ground plane between them is short blocks and a good deal of new sidewalk.

Paved multi-use paths run the northern rim along the Bow. The building is part of the Plus 15 network, which in this part of town is a working piece of infrastructure rather than a novelty.

Homes

One hundred and twenty-five metres over thirty-six storeys, completed in 2017, carrying 232 homes. The La Caille Group developed it and S2 Architecture designed it, with ITC Construction Group building it.

The homes sit above a mixed-use base holding retail and office space, with three levels of parking below grade. Suites run central air conditioning, which is not standard in Calgary stock of any age.

One register counts 37 floors above ground where the city height table and a second register both read 36, so we have used the lower figure. The height is stable at 125 metres to the spire across three sources, and that is the number to trust when the storey counts argue.

Everyday

Downtown West and Kerby station opened on the Blue Line in 2012, and the 7 Avenue corridor carries both lines east through the core from 8 Street SW. The walk to the office towers is short enough that the Plus 15 decides your February route rather than the weather does.

Contemporary Calgary occupies the former Centennial Planetarium a short walk west, a 1967 building by McMillan Long and Associates that became a public gallery in 2019 and now runs somewhere between ten and fourteen exhibitions a year. Cowboys Park and the Mewata Armouries sit in the same few blocks, which puts 17.3 acres of open ground and a skatepark within four blocks of the door.

North on the river, the Peace Bridge crosses to Sunnyside. Groceries and the daily list run east into the core, and Eau Claire is a walk northeast, where the block that held Eau Claire Market is under redevelopment after the building came down in 2024.

Vogue on 6 Avenue SW, the tall arched window over the entrance carrying the building's red V, the tower rising behind it.

Amenities

The amenity floor carries a rooftop gym of about three thousand square feet, a yoga studio, a party room and a game room. An owners' lounge joins the same floor.

A further lounge occupies the thirty-sixth floor, and more than one rooftop terrace opens onto the city. Two lounges at two heights is a thing to check on a tour, because the amenity that gets used is the one on a floor you already have a reason to visit.

A full-time concierge works the lobby. Parking is titled and heated below grade with indoor visitor stalls, homes carry a storage locker, secured bicycle storage sits in the building, and three high-speed elevators serve the floors. Fee inclusions and house rules change at a vote, so read the current condominium documents before any of it decides anything for you.

Edges

The Bow closes the north with the pathway along it. The CP tracks close the south and the Beltline begins on the far side. Ninth Street W is the eastern line and the office core takes over past it. Fourteenth Street W closes the west, where the district gives way to Sunalta and the hill behind it.

Over the river north, Sunnyside and Kensington hold a low-rise main street reachable on foot. South across the tracks, the Beltline runs its own denser grid. The wider map sits on the full neighbourhoods index.

The Vogue Edit

Where to start. Hours move, so check before you go.

Cowboys Park
17.3 acres on the old Mewata Stadium site. The skatepark opened in 2000 as the largest of its kind in Canada, and festivals take the grounds through the summer.

Contemporary Calgary
701 11 Street SW, in the 1967 planetarium. Tuesday through Sunday from eleven until six, with Thursday running to nine.

Peace Bridge
Santiago Calatrava, 130.6 metres, open since March 24 2012. It crosses to Sunnyside and it is the reason a walk north from here is a walk rather than a detour.

Alforno Bakery & Cafe
222 7 Street SW. Half seven in the morning until nine at night, every day, with bread, pastry, pizza and hand-made pasta out of the same room.
