Springbank Hill

The Atlas

Your walk starts on 26 Avenue SW, across from Griffith Woods School, at the entrance to the community park where the association's garden boxes stand at varying heights, wheelchair-accessible beds among them. The ground falls from north to south, and the plan behind Springbank Hill says the slope affords views of the foothills and the Rocky Mountains.

Grounds

Springbank Hill covers about 6.5 square kilometres on the city's west edge. 17 Avenue SW runs its north and 69 Street SW its east, and Stoney Trail SW wraps the west and the south. The City's annexation record brings the land into Calgary in 1995, and the City's plan says the community was established in 1997 through the East Springbank I Community Plan, the first of five communities planned for the East Springbank area, on small acreages of about two hectares each. The Springbank Hill Area Structure Plan, approved on June 13 2017, replaced those documents with one.

The plan records the ground falling from about 1,220 metres in the north to 1,120 in the south and draining south through north-south ravines, inside the Elbow River watershed, with one natural ravine up to eight metres deep. It protects the ravine system, the aspen woodlands, native fescue and the sloping Elbow River Escarpment, and it keeps the Country Residential areas at the character they had before annexation. We walk the ground where a lot meets a ravine before we write about it, since the plan asks development there to adapt to the slope.

Homes

The plan sets five neighbourhood areas, from Country Residential, where a parcel keeps a minimum of 0.8 hectares, to Medium Density, and its Low Density areas take single-detached, semi-detached, clustered and row housing. A mixed-use area of about 16 hectares runs along the 17 Avenue SW corridor, with buildings up to ten storeys. The City's 2026 assessment roll dates more than half of today's residential parcels to the 2000s and carries more than twice as many from the 2020s as from the 2010s, and the 2021 census counted 9,840 people in the community's private households, in the City's community profile.

The Springbank Hill Homeowners Association, incorporated as a society in 1997, keeps the green spaces and the stone and wood fences around them, and its architectural controls call for roofs of pine or cedar shakes, or an equivalent. The community association names two more homeowner bodies, The Slopes Community Association and the Springborough Homeowners Association. We read a Springbank Hill title for a homeowners' encumbrance before anything else, since the community association's area carries three homeowner bodies.

Everyday

The 69 Street CTrain station sits in the north-east corner, at the end of the West LRT line the City built in 2012 from 69 Street to Sunalta, and the Blue Line stops there today, with bus routes 164 and 51 beside it on 69 Street SW. Ambrose University, at 150 Ambrose Circle SW, formed in 2007 from Alliance University College and Nazarene University College and moved to its 23-acre southwest campus in 2008. Its own page names Ambrose of Milan, a fourth-century Christian leader, as its namesake. The community association floods two outdoor rinks under the City's Adopt-A-Rink program, one at the park along the eastern traffic circle on Springbank Boulevard SW and one in Summit of Montreux, on the south part of St. Moritz Drive SW.

Ernest Manning High School, a Calgary Board of Education senior high at 20 Springborough Boulevard SW, opened in 1963 under the name of Alberta's eighth premier, and the Board's trustees voted to carry the name to its building here. Griffith Woods School, the Board's elementary and junior high at 7652 26 Avenue SW, takes its name from Griffith Woods Park, a natural environment park beside the Elbow River established in 2000 after Wilbur and Betty Griffith donated land from their estate. Menno Simons Christian School, an elementary and junior high of the Palliser School Division, is at 7000 Elkton Drive SW, and Rundle College's elementary school and its junior and senior high school sit on 17 Avenue SW. Designations change year to year, so confirm current catchments with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District.

Edges

17 Avenue SW runs the north, with Aspen Woods across it, and 69 Street SW closes the east, with Signal Hill across. Stoney Trail SW wraps the west and the south, with Discovery Ridge across it on the south, and the Province dates the West Calgary Ring Road's opening, in stages, to the fall of 2023.
